INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- The No. 1 overall pick is still looking for basket No. 1. Anthony Bennett, the first player taken in this years NBA draft, hasnt scored a field goal for the Cavaliers. Through four games, Clevelands burly forward from Brampton, Ont., has missed each of his 15 shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers. He appears lost with the ball in his hands, causing some to wonder if the Cavs made a mistake with their choice. Hes O-for-the-season so far. According to STATS, Bennett is just the fifth rookie -- playing a minimum of five minutes -- to begin his career without making a field goal in the first four games. None of the other four, though, was selected ahead of every player in the draft. Cavs coach Mike Brown said there are several reasons for Bennetts drought. "Hes probably pressing to a certain degree," Brown said after practice Tuesday. "So its probably a little of that and a little bit of being on a big stage now in the regular season with it counting. Theres probably some of where his opponents are looking at him and saying that theyre going to come at him. They may not care that hes the No. 1 pick." For comparisons sake, Philadelphia 76ers rookie Michael Carter-Williams has 26 field goals already, and eight other rookies who have attempted at least 15 shots have put one shot through the rim. Bennetts alarming field-goal deficiency extended to four games Monday night when he went 0 for 3 in 10 minutes during a 93-92 win over Minnesota. He was not available to speak to reporters following practice as he quickly dressed and went home to take care of personal business before the Cavs flew to Milwaukee. The 20-year-old showed flashes of offensive firepower during the exhibition season, but the regular season has been nothing but a series of missed shots. He is 2 for 4 at the free-throw line, with each attempt coming in his NBA debut against Brooklyn. The Cavs insist its too early for them to be overly concerned about Bennetts scoring woes. Brown dismissed any thought of sitting the first-year player to clear his head. However, Bennetts inability to score -- hes averaging 12.8 minutes per game -- could show that hes going to need some extra time before he can be counted on as a major contributor. "I look at it as hes a guy that can grow slowly into his role with us and thats the exciting part of it," Brown said. "I just want him to keep going out there and playing, and if you can take advantage of your opponent on either end of the floor, go ahead and do it." And while Bennett hasnt delivered on the offensive end, the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder has provided some solid defence and rebounding. At Indiana last Saturday night, when he tried to flip in a layup and had it roll around the rim and out, Bennett grabbed six boards. "Defensively, hes been better than what I thought," Brown said. "I actually thought he was going to struggle defensively -- bad. But hes picked up on the concepts and hes been tougher and stronger than what I expected. "At the end of the day, and Ive seen it with my own eyes, he can score. He can score from all three levels and once he figures out how hard he has to play offensively in order for it to happen on a possession by possession occurrence, hell be good." Until then, Bennett is getting support from his teammates. Theyre urging him to keep his chin up and the shots will eventually go down. "We just keep encouraging him," point guard Jarrett Jack said. "We want him to understand, You made it this far because you are a special player and dont ever forget that. The one thing you do have to have in this league to be successful is confidence, and once that starts to waver, its going to have a snowball effect. "There was going to be a time this season when he was going to have a tough three-game stretch. Its just that it started in the first couple of games. There are 78 more to go. (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators will try to record consecutive wins for the first time in over a month when they visit the lowly Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday for the opener of a home-and-home series. The Senators halted a two-game slide with Mondays shootout decision against visiting Philadelphia. It was only the fourth win in the last 12 games for Ottawa, which hasnt won two in a row since a season-best three-game winning streak from Nov. 5-9. Jason Spezza scored in the third round of the shootout to lift Ottawa to a 5-4 triumph over the Flyers. Spezza was the final shooter for Ottawa and he slowed down in front of the net before deking to the forehand and stuffing the puck in. Sean Couturier then rung his wrister off the right post to end the game. "We talked about getting more consistent in our play," said Spezza. "We all knew that if we can be on the same page, well have better results and its starting to show." LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant is making steady progress in his injury recovery, although the Los Angeles Lakers star is likely still weeks away from a return to the court. Before Friday nights game with the San Antonio Spurs, Bryant said hes running on flat ground "a little bit more aggressively" and improving the flexibility in his ankle. Bryant also works out regularly on a special treadmill at the Lakers training complex. While Bryant isnt projecting a return date, he has said he would need about three weeks of conditioning work before returning to practice. He thinks this week counts toward that total. "This week its done pretty well, actually," Bryant said. "Its been OK. Ive been able to push pretty hard and come back, push hard again. The recovery of it has been pretty good." The fourth-leading scorer in NBA history tore his Achilles tendon in April during a game against Golden State. He hasnt practiced with the Lakers since then, but his concerns are more about his overall athleticism than the Achilles. "Its not anything to do with the tendon necessarily," Bryant said. Roberts, who suffered from asthma, had always refused to soak his firesuit in flame retardant chemicals because of the fumes. His grandson, Matt McDaniel, accepted Roberts induction and noted his death led to safety improvements in NASCAR. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- This season is beginning to resemble 2006-07 for All-Star forward Corey Perry, one of five Anaheim Ducks holdovers who helped them win their only Stanley Cup title seven years ago. Rookie goalie Frederik Andersen won his sixth straight game to start his NHL career, making 35 saves in place of ailing Jonas Hiller, and the league-leading Ducks extended their winning streak to five with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. "If you look around this room, weve got a lot of new faces," Perry said. "But theres a lot of guys in here with a lot of character that want to win and prove that they belong here and go out there every night working as hard as they can. Theyre playing every game like its their last. And if we keep doing that, were going to be successful." (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators will try to record consecutive wins for the first time in over a month when they visit the lowly Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday for the opener of a home-and-home series. The Senators halted a two-game slide with Mondays shootout decision against visiting Philadelphia. It was only the fourth win in the last 12 games for Ottawa, which hasnt won two in a row since a season-best three-game winning streak from Nov. 5-9. Jason Spezza scored in the third round of the shootout to lift Ottawa to a 5-4 triumph over the Flyers. Spezza was the final shooter for Ottawa and he slowed down in front of the net before deking to the forehand and stuffing the puck in. Sean Couturier then rung his wrister off the right post to end the game. "We talked about getting more consistent in our play," said Spezza. "We all knew that if we can be on the same page, well have better results and its starting to show." NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Predators have swapped defencemen with the New York Rangers, sending right-handed shooter Kevin Klein to New York in exchange for a lefty in Michael Del Zotto. The Predators announced the trade Wednesday before heading to Vancouver for a four-game road swing. COLUMBUS – The Maple Leafs continue to search for an identity. On a chilly Friday evening in Columbus, that reality was hammered home once more. The Leafs fell for the third time in the past four games, outworked by the Blue Jackets in a 5-2 loss at Nationwide Arena. A fast, physical, determined bunch in 2013 en route to the first playoff berth in nine years, the group this fall has bared only a passing resemblance to that identity so far. “We know what it was – I think everybody knows what it was,” Jay McClement said of the teams identity in conversation with the Leaf Report following the latest loss. “Were struggling to live up to that every night I think right now.” There were signs of that identity emerging in a hearty 4-2 win against Anaheim on Tuesday night. Though they started slowly with the Ducks in town – just two shots in the first frame – the Leafs got to playing a harder, more refined game as they took control of the final two periods en route to their seventh victory this season. It appeared to be a potential starting point. “For the most part, the last game we played was probably back to our identity and then we come out tonight and you dont really see any resemblance of it,” said McClement, second among Toronto forwards with upwards of 21 minutes against the Blue Jackets. “Its just a consistency in getting that game back. Its all the things we talked about all year last year; just being a physical team, a forechecking team, and playing fast.” Stumbling starts have become an increasingly concerning part of the equation. Friday was the fourth time in five games that the Leafs (sans Joffrey Lupul, who was nursing a bruised right foot) have managed five shots or fewer in the first frame, a mere five against Sergei Bobrosky within a sloppy, uninspired opening 20 minutes which saw Columbus draw 16 shots and a 1-0 lead. “Just seems to be one of those things,” said James van Riemsdyk. “Every game we come out and get outshot 16-3 in the first period and then start to play a little bit better. Usually when you do that you dont leave yourself much breathing room to find ways to win games. We definitely didnt play anywhere close to our abilities tonight.” “If I had the answer to that,” Randy Carlyle said with a sigh of his teams sluggish starts. “I wish I did have the answer to that.” Concerned with his teams performance throughout an uneven and yet successful start, Carlyle called for an improved work ethic prior to the win over Anaheim. “Our work ethic has to be elevated to a point where we can create more of an identity for ourselves,” he said on Tuesday morning. “I dont know if we can say what type of hockey club we are yet.” Recovering from their off-kilter start – Jonathan Bernier stopped 22 of the first 23 shots – the Leafs entered the third frame on Friday even at one. But after a quick goal from Marian Gaborik and a shorthanded back-breaker from Brandon Dubinsky, any hope of success was all but extinguished. “Were 11 games in and were nowhere near the peak of playing our best hockey,” said van Riemsdyk of his group, now 7-4-0 on the year. “Obviously we know we have a lot of work to do.” The Leafs established a physical presence last year by being a quick and often relentless group on the forecheck, wearing opponents down by mucking it up in the corners. They would chip pucks, chase, and grind. And in conjunction with solid special teams, sturdy goaltending and a lot of offence – the Leafs were a poor defensive team at even-strength – theyd win a fair number of games. “We think as a forechecking hockey club that you dont go in and swing by people, you go in and take the body,” said Carlyle before the Friday loss. “Thats probably the mandate that were going to try and play to. I would say that we havent done a very good job of that … Were a team still trying to find its identity.” The wins were there early this year – six in the first seven games – despite underlying concerns, but of late those results have turned; three losses now in the past four games with the daunting Penguins in town on Saturday. The search continues for who and what the Leafs are. “Weve got to start with being prepared mentally to play that game,” McClement said. “I just think we cant rest on that identity, we have to earn that identity every night. “You have to live up to it. Thats how teams expect us to play. Its disappointing when we dont play like that because thats how we can win games.” Five Points 1. Long-awaited debut David Clarkson played just under 16 minutes in his Maple Leafs debut. The 29-year-old began the night alongside Dave Bolland and Jay McClement, eventually finishing the proceedings with Nazem Kadri and Mason Raymond. Clarkson finished with four shots, whistled for hooking on his third shift of the game. “I think he looked rusty,” said Carlyle of Clarkson, who hadnt played since Sept. 27 in the preseason. [But] the one thing you know [is] hes going to try.” “No I didnt feel that,” said Clarkson of any rust in spite of a month-long layoff. “Thats maybe what Randy feels. Getting used to playing with guys, minutes, I guess youd have to ask him those questions.” Clarkson did present some of the promised elements in his first action with the club. He was a force in some instances on the forecheck and proved an irritant at times. 2. Alarming starts “The first period wasnt us at all,” McClement said of the teams start against the Blue Jackets. Sluggish first periods have become all too familiar for the Leafs in the past 10 days or so. A mere three shots were on the clock in the opening frame against the Wild, three shots during a clash with the Blackhawks, two shots against the Ducks and five shots against Columbus most recently. Overall this season the Leafs have been outshot 125-92 in first periods, outscored 10-7. 3. Clarksons evolution Though he remains a pesky presence, Clarkson has evolved from the player who first entered the league with New Jersey in 2007. “I fought my way into the league,” he said before his debut with the Leafs on Friday. “Thats still part of my game, but I think the more I got used to the level and everything I think the game started coming together for me.” A look at Clarksons fighting history reveals such a shift. “Definitely when I was younger there was more fighting or agitating, but I still dont shy away from that now,” he said. Subtle adjustments with a new team Just weeks into his Leafs career, Bernier continues to adjust to the style of his new team and more specifically, the defence core. As the backup to Jonathan Quick for years in Los Angeles, Bernier “had to step in on what [Jonathan] Quick liked” as far as working with the teams defenders. “Obviously when youre a backup its different,” he told the Leaf Report earlier this week. “When the guy plays a lot you have to read what hes doing so when you step in its going to be the same thing.” Now in Toronto and a competitor for the No. 1 job, Bernier is trying to assert his own preferences. Because he intends to square up every shooter, the 25-year-old wants to ensure that back-door assignments are handled by his defenders. Adjustments typically come through game experience. “It has to happen on the play,” he said of hashing out any changes. “Lets say I get beat in the game and Ill be like ‘Look I think thats going to work for us if we do this. It takes time to adjust.” “I dont know about the other D, but Im talking to Bernier every day about positioning when theres a point shot, when hes out playing the puck, all that,” Carl Gunnarsson told the Leaf Report. “If we let the back-door pass through its going to be a tough one for him right … Weak-side, weve got to make sure weve got the guy, at least tie up his stick and try to box out so he sees it. “Just trying to figure out what he wants because in the end hes the guy whos doing all the work back there.” 5. Rielly Morgan Rielly played his ninth game with the Leafs on Friday. When he suits up against the Penguins on Saturday night he will have exercised the first year of his entry-level contract. The 19-year-old will have additionally secured one year towards eventual arbitration rights (four are required). The next big hurdle for Rielly is the 40-game plateau. After 40 games on the active roster (even those he doesnt play), Rielly will have garnered one “accrued” season in the NHL, thus initiating the clock on his path toward unrestricted free agency. With seven accrued seasons in the league (or the age of 27), players qualify for UFA status. LAS VEGAS -- Canelo Alvarez gets a pass, if only because everyone who fights Floyd Mayweather Jr. gets a pass. Lose a second fight to someone not named Mayweather, though, and the red-haired Mexicans star could begin to fade. "I learned a lot from fighting Floyd, but Im ready to get back in the ring to maintain the path that I was on before," Alvarez said. "This is what I love to do." The path Alvarez was on took a detour in September when Mayweather dominated him over 12 rounds, handing Alvarez his first loss. He gets a totally different type of opponent Saturday night, taking on slugger Alfredo Angulo in a junior middleweight fight that likely wont be wanting for action. The story line against Mayweather was whether a young and strong champion could solve a puzzle no other boxer had been able to. The story line against Angulo will be whether Alvarez can come back from the loss and establish himself again as one of the stars of the sport. "What happened in September is in the past," Alvarez insisted. "Im fully concentrated on this fight." Alvarez didnt pick a walkover for his comeback fight, the first of what he hopes to be three bouts this year. The Calgary Flames try to string together back-to-back wins for only the second time this season as they play host on Wednesday night to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flames have not won two straight since Oct. 9-11, a pair of home wins over Montreal and New Jersey that were part of a 3-0-2 start. However, they are just 4-11-1 since and snapped a six-game slide with Mondays 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets. Calgary failed to hold four one-goal leads in the game, giving up an overtime- forcing tally with just six seconds left in regulation. James had 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, and Miami routed Detroit 110-95 on Sunday, avenging a home loss to the Pistons less than a week ago. The Pacers have the NBAs best record -- and this will be the first meeting between the teams since Miamis seven-game victory in last seasons playoffs. First, the Heat had a score to settle against a Detroit team that won 107-97 at Miami on Tuesday.
